So Tyga has another newly minted mixtape out. This is the third mixtape out this year from the hard working artist. Tyga, cousin of alternative hip-hop singer Travie McCoy of Gym Class Heroes fame, is best known for his affiliation with Young Money Entertainment. Tyga will be the next YME artist to release a #1 album with his next album Careless Word: Rise of the Last King. Having never listened to Tyga before but often hearing “Tyga go hard” “every mixtape he does is classic” I had high hopes for this album.
These high hopes quickly plummeted straight to the ground from the get go.The first two songs of the mixtape Bitch I’m the Shit and Bitch Better Have my Money both rely on a one line chorus, the title, chopped and repeated ad nauseum. Simple beats that sound like they were bought off one of those shady banners on Dat Piff. Verse’s that only rhyme when mumbled and have that terrible last word echo effect after every line. The title mixtape track even has only one verse that is repeated twice to give the song a little breadth. These songs are straight train wrecks, no other way to put it.
The rest of the tape continues in about the same way. A few of the songs rise slightly above the opening , such as Dancin 4 Dollars and the two parter Heisman. Dancin is a slowed down ballad about that hard workin stripper from high school. You know the type, just trying to get through college on the generosity of the dollar throwin Tyga. The song works primarily because it’s down tempo and relies on a actual chorus and less on wordplay.
Heisman has one of the more interesting beats on the album. The song is a showcase for Honey Cocaine. Honey seems to be a artist solely under Tyga, is of Asian decent, and raps in the exact same manner as her mentor. I would bet serious money that Tyga co-wrote all of her lines. Never the less this is one of the most palatable songs on the album and one of the few highlights. Heisman 2 continues with the theme of the first part with a more stripped, slow down beat. Almost screwed but not quite. If both songs were back to back it allow for one less skip button to be pressed. Would have been a true win for the listener.
Another track that can be listened to a couple times is the closer The Motto. The song begins with Drake laying down a limestone solid opening verse and followed by Lil Wayne giving a shit, rapping instead of giggling. In fact in sounds more like a Drake song featuring Tyga. That’s as good as it’s going to get on this piece.
This mixtape is obviously thrown together on short notice to appease fans with the delay of his sophmore album Careless World, expected to be out on January 24th, 2012. I would skip this for sure, but if you must download it, listen to the Top Tracks and recycle the rest.
